RIVM

Organisation

The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) is a public organisation that conducts research, advises on policy and helps to implement policies with a view to promoting public health and maintaining a safe and clean environment. RIVM works to prevent and control outbreaks of infectious diseases, promotes public health and consumer safety, and helps to protect the quality of the environment. The institute collects and collates knowledge and information from various sources, both national and international. This knowledge is applied within RIVM and is placed at the disposal of policy-makers, researchers, regulatory authorities and the general public. RIVM has a total of approximately 1,500 staff. Within RIVM, the Centre for Environmental Safety and Security focuses on the threat of environmental accidents and incidents, including nuclear emergencies, and the consequences of such incidents should they occur. The Centre conducts research as input for policy on safety and security, including radiation protection policies. Research on radiation effects focuses on mathematical modelling of effects of exposure to low doses of radiation and aims to contribute to a robust scientific underpinning of radiation protection. RIVM has been nominated by the Dutch ministry of Economic Affairs as Programme Manager.

Role in the project

RIVM will be leader of a task in WP6 (infrastructures) and participates actively in Work Packages 2 and 3.
